Buick Creates Strong Luxury Demand in China

Models like the all-new 2012 Buick Verano and 2012 Buick LaCrosse might be fueling a large-scale comeback for the luxury automaker here in the United States, but the company is also surging overseas. Take for instance, the emerging Chinese market, which has a strong appetite for exquisite luxury and daring performance.
There, Buick parent company, General Motors has seen an incredible growth of 9.8 percent in December alone. That translates into 196,797 units. What's more, the company has witnessed an overall growth of 16.2 percent (1.2-million sold) for all of 2011. When you narrow the branding down to Buick specifically, the numbers become even more impressive. Sales for the luxury automaker increased by 17.4 percent (645,537 sold) throughout 2011.
Perhaps most shocking is the fact that these trends actually go against the overall sales figures in the automotive industry for last year. Specifically, almost every other automaker in China saw their sales slightly decrease. This was caused by the Chinese government ending subsidies for rural buyers and by phasing out a cut in sales tax early in 2011.
Meanwhile, GM and Buick are reporting record sales. So how did they do it? While other automakers struggled to keep their prices low, and car buyers looked for the best deal possible, Buick was in a prime position to offer its vehicles at a highly-competitive price. This is what ultimately led to increased sales and profit for Buick within the region.
And we all know how the story goes with stronger sales numbers. They tend to lead to increased production, further investments in existing models, and even new, leading-edge tech.
